The mission of Ukrainian Literature: Rights On!
A program for publishers and literary agents designed to inspire foreigners’ interest in Ukrainian books, and to enable Ukrainian publishers to start or increase exporting Ukrainian works by establishing direct contacts with international partners.
- Priority program for the Book Arsenal for 3 years.
The Book Arsenal is presenting new rights catalogues of Ukrainian publishers (2022 edition).
We kindly invite our international partners to review these catalogues, and to contact the publishers directly in order to establish cooperation.
Your support and attention to Ukrainian books and authors is especially important for the Ukrainian creative sector in this difficult time of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
According to the survey, 95% of publishers have reported a catastrophic drop in sales during one month, and only 30% have enough costs to pay the salaries to their employees. Buying rights will help Ukrainian publishers save the industry.
As the program was launched for the first time, 147 online B2B talks were held during the program with the participation of 30 Ukrainian publishers and 37 international ones from 24 countries of the world. The results of the B2B talks were the following: the promotion of Ukrainian literature abroad, at least 23 agreements on selling the rights concluded; some books by Ukrainian authors already announced to be published abroad.
Thanks to the cooperation with the Department of Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, 23 embassies of Ukraine in other countries joined the announcement of the B2B talks.
The Ukrainian Book Institute (Translate Ukraine), House of Europe (Translation Grants), Creative Europe (Support for Literary Translations), Ukrainian Cultural Foundation: New Opportunities for the literary sector presented their opportunities for translation and promotion of Ukrainian literature abroad.
Also, the educational component was held:
- 10 educational videos about Ukrainian books that are recommended for translation by experts were downloaded on the YouTube channel of the Mystetskyi Arsenal,
- 10 articles about international book markets were published on Chytomo website.
The program was funded by the European Union’s EU4Business initiative, implemented by the EBRD.
The second year of the program was successful. A total of 142 online B2B talks were held, with the participation of 21 Ukrainian and 41 international publishers from 22 countries. All the B2B talks took place on the Hopin platform, which made it possible to hold them simultaneously, bringing together people from different places around the world.
So far, the organizers of the program have information about 16 signed agreements.
During the project, the Ukrainian Book Institute (Translate Ukraine), House of Europe (Translation Grants), Creative Europe (Support for Literary Translations), Ukrainian Cultural Foundation: New Opportunities for the literary sector presented their opportunities for translation and promotion of Ukrainian literature abroad.
