Litera Scripta Manet / Written Words Remain

Litera Scripta Manet / Written Words Remain

ArtiYa Calligraphy School

The exhibition project Littera Scripta Manent / Written Words Remain, created in collaboration with calligraphers and designers, is dedicated to the research and artistic interpretation of texts by the contemporary authors who died as a result of Russian aggression in Ukraine.

Memory is the intangible legacy that we are able to preserve and pass on.

The memory of servicemen and servicewomen, poets who managed to share with us the cherished and profound—testimonies of brotherhood and sisterhood, respect and love. Short messages or long texts, smiles and jokes, a cup of coffee or one candy bar for several people in a place where you look death in the face—these are manifestations of the most sincere care that the authors share with us.

The memory of the writers who chose to be with those at war (Viktoriia Amelina), who documented crimes and were bearers of truth, helped paint a realistic portrait of the enemy and convey it to the whole world.

Through calligraphic means, we visualize words full of realistic sharpness or romantic softness and human sincerity, as an attempt to preserve and multiply the creativity of the writers and poets who managed to record their thoughts, emotions and testimonies before their lives were lost.

Unlike the fate of the Ukrainian cultural figures of the 20th century, whose works were lost without a trace, it is important for us to highlight and pass on the legacy of our contemporaries so that we do not lose these testimonies again.

The exhibition Littera Scripta Manent / Written Words Remain is a contribution of the art of calligraphy and typography to ensuring that the words of the authors, who could have continued writing, live on and become part of our cultural self-identity, shared responsibility and collective memory.

The exhibition features typographic posters with original authors’ fonts, artistic and calligraphic works and murals.

During the festival, an art book is being created in the format of a joint performance by artists.

The exhibition is complemented by the interactive workshop available to everyone.

Over 12 years of war, Russia killed 289 Ukrainian literary figures (the search for names is ongoing). Among them there are writers, poets, translators, editors, publishers, librarians, printers; both military personnel and civilians.
