MATELOT

The purpose of the Ukrainian Maritime Prose Competition Named after Yurii Lysianskyi MATELOT is to properly cover the historical figure of Yurii Lysianskyi, a descendant of the noble Cossack family, a native of the city of Nizhyn, the first Ukrainian circumnavigator in the expedition on the sloops Nadezhda and Neva (1803-1806) led by Johann von Krusenstern, a geographer, oceanographer, ethnographer; as well as to stimulate the development of modern Ukrainian marine studies.

Holding of the Ukrainian Maritime Prose Competition MATELOT contributes to the stimulation of public interest in the marine topic in literature, which in its turn serves to establish Ukraine’s status as a maritime state, to increase the prestige of the seafarer’s profession in Ukrainian society, to draw attention to modern problems of Ukraine’s marine, river and shipbuilding industries.
