Botakoz Kassymbekova

Dr. Botakoz Kassymbekova is an Assistant Professor in Modern History at the University of Basel, with a specialization in Soviet history and Russian imperial history. Her first book “Despite Cultures” traces Soviet imperial strategies in Central Asia. Another book project, titled “Imperial Innocence,” is a cultural history of Soviet imperialism in co-authorship with Kimberly St. Julien-Varnon. Her current research project investigates the post-Stalinist Soviet Union through the lives of older people.
