Lyuba Yakimchuk is an award-winning writer, screenwriter, and playwright. Born in the Luhansk region, she lives in Kyiv.
She is the author of the poetry collections Like Fashion, Apricots of Donbas, and The Making of Tenderness, and co-author of the screenplays for the films Slovo House and Slovo House: Unfinished Novel. She also wrote the play Schrödinger’s Cat for the Vienna Volkstheater festival and co-authored The Wall for the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater.
Her poetry has been translated into thirty languages and performed on stages across Europe, North America, and South Asia. Among other appearances, Yakymchuk took part in a performance by John Legend during the Grammy Awards. The French audiobook edition of Apricots of Donbas was narrated by Catherine Deneuve.
Yakimchuk is also a co-creator of music projects and a participant in music and spoken word performances. Together with Irish poet Mary Brenley, she wrote the libretto for Olesia Zdorevetska’s musical play Freedom Letters. She also co-wrote songs and performed spoken word on the album Ukrainian Songs of Love and Hate by composer and musician Yuriy Gurzhy. Together with free jazz double bassist Mark Tokar, she recorded the album Apricots of Donbas.
Yakymchuk’s essays and reportage have been published in BBC, New Statesman, Gazeta Wyborcza, L’Obs, Kometa, and Reporters. One of her literary reportages became the textual foundation for a photobook by British photographer Mark Neville about Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Her work has been featured by The New York Times, BBC, CNN, CBC, and France 24.
